Onion Message Jamming in the Lightning Network

In the realm of network communications, particularly concerning the handling and forwarding of messages in a peer-to-peer network, the reputation of a peer plays a crucial role in determining its capacity to forward messages and manage payments. High-reputation peers are afforded fewer restrictions and can service more transactions, while those with poor reputations face limitations such as rate limits and potential channel closures. The management of payment channels involves certain costs, including fees associated with opening and closing these channels, as well as risks related to maintaining open channels over time due to the opportunity cost tied to the locked-in value.

The concept of applying a reputation system to onion message relaying presents several complexities. Currently, there is no established method to distinctly evaluate what constitutes good or bad behavior specifically for onion messages, which complicates the integration of reputation systems that also handle payment forwardings, like HTLCs (Hashed Timelock Contracts). A significant challenge is that forwarding nodes do not receive feedback on whether the onion messages they relay lead to successful transactions, such as invoice requests or actual payments. This lack of feedback means there is no basis to reward or penalize actions, making it difficult to establish a fair and effective reputation score for these activities.

Moreover, if onion messages were scored based on their transmission alone, this would not incur any cost to the sender, making it feasible for an entity to build a positive reputation inexpensively and potentially misuse it to spam the network. Consequently, the only practical measure currently available is monitoring the rate of onion messages per second. However, this approach effectively serves as a simple rate limiter, which already exists within the system, indicating a need for more refined mechanisms to assess and manage reputation in networks handling both financial transactions and data transmissions.
