PQC - What is our Goal, Even?

Apr 15 - Apr 20, 2026

  • Recent conversations among Bitcoin developers have highlighted a significant divergence in objectives when addressing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) concerns, particularly relating to Bitcoin's security against quantum attacks.

A central point of contention is the strategy for minimizing potential risks associated with quantum computing capabilities that could compromise Bitcoin's cryptographic foundations.

The primary goal identified involves enhancing the security of Bitcoin wallets least likely to adopt new standards independently, thereby decreasing the likelihood that a significant portion of Bitcoin needs to be forked or burned due to vulnerabilities. Popular wallets like Bitcoin.com, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, and Blockchain.com, often listed at the top in app stores, typically focus less on Bitcoin-specific features and more on broader cryptocurrency services, which might leave them vulnerable.

Discussions also delve into what should not be priorities at this stage. For instance, achieving the best possible post-quantum security setup for advanced configurations or designing the optimal signature scheme prematurely are seen as less critical compared to securing the coins at risk immediately. This is because the landscape of quantum computing and its impact on current cryptographic schemes is expected to evolve, potentially offering better solutions by the time such quantum threats become imminent.

Furthermore, there’s an acknowledgment that any approach must consider the broad spectrum of Bitcoin users and stakeholders, many of whom may not be deeply familiar with or concerned about the nuances of quantum risks. The debate extends to the implications of potential strategies like freezing or forcibly migrating certain wallets, which could undermine fundamental principles like decentralization and user sovereignty that are core to Bitcoin’s philosophy.

In essence, the conversation among developers is a complex balancing act between preparing for future technological challenges without compromising the values and practical usability of Bitcoin today. Developers are urged to consider multiple perspectives and avoid oversimplified solutions to what are deeply technical and potentially impactful decisions.
