We made the bitcoin-dev mailing list readable: 15 years, 24,699 messages

Oct 27 - Oct 30, 2026

  • A new, user-friendly mirror of the bitcoin-dev mailing list archive has been established and is updated daily.

This archive distinguishes itself from alternatives such as public-inbox by offering one dedicated page per discussion thread, where message quotes are folded for clarity. It provides stable, Message-ID-based permalinks to ensure consistent, shareable links. Users gain access to three comprehensive indexes that organize the same data: a timeline of topics, a page cataloging each Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) discussed, and a separate page for every author contributing to the archive. All messages in the archive are presented in their original form, accompanied only by succinct topic blurbs for additional context. Each entry includes a direct link back to its original source.

Special attention is given to two key aspects of the archive’s structure. First, name merging consolidates different spellings or variations of an individual’s address onto a single page—such as “Luke-Jr” and “Luke Dashjr”—while deliberately excluding list or group addresses from this process. Corrections or preferences regarding these merges are acted upon promptly when brought to the administrators’ attention. Second, threading is primarily determined by message references, but for several hundred replies lacking these, subject matches within a 180-day window are used instead. Any issues with mis-threaded discussions are considered easily fixable if users report them.

Navigation by date has been enhanced to facilitate browsing. A "Years" entry in the section navigation now lists all years since 2011, along with message counts. Selecting a year brings up threads initiated during that period, organized by month and displayed in chronological order based on the first message. A row of month links at the top of each year page enables users to jump directly to any desired month without scrolling, and each month heading functions as an anchor for quick access. The home page features a "Recently active" list that surfaces the latest messages, providing another convenient entry point. These navigation improvements, including clearer labeling and the addition of the month bar, were implemented in response to user feedback, further refining the archive’s accessibility.

The maintainers welcome inclusion of this resource among other public bitcoin-dev archives and remain receptive to community feedback regarding both its usefulness and any concerns about its presence.
