The concept of reverse header-fetching as a method to enhance Bitcoin's synchronization process was initially proposed in 2012, as highlighted on the Bitcoin Wiki 2012. Despite this early suggestion, the necessary peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol changes were not developed by 2024. The urgency for a solution increased due to the affordability and prevalence of headers-spam attacks by that time.
In response to the emerging threat, an alternative approach known as "presync" was implemented. This method effectively addressed the issue without the need for immediate P2P protocol modifications or extensive deployment periods. The presync mechanism involves downloading headers twice, which, despite being redundant, requires only a minimal amount of data compared to the entire blockchain size. This strategy was documented and discussed in detail in a 2024 publication on Bitcoin Core's official site, accessible here: needed. This solution reflects a practical compromise, balancing efficiency with rapid deployment to counteract vulnerabilities in the network.
