The proposal to replace the conventional rules with a system based on monotonic timestamps offers several advantages, primarily simplifying the proof process and enhancing safety. This change would eliminate the need for miners and developers to be concerned with Median Time Past (MTP), which currently plays a critical role in timestamping within blockchain technology. By incorporating monotonic timestamps, the system inherently prevents discrepancies that arise from "negative solvetimes." These occur when the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm (DAA) perceives what is effectively negative work, leading to an inappropriate lowering of mining difficulty.
Further analysis suggests that a shift towards monotonic timestamps also helps in maintaining the integrity of the consensus mechanism’s ordering. The traditional reliance on block height as a mere label proves inadequate because it lacks the necessary causality and ordering crucial for state transitions within the blockchain's architecture. The DAA, by utilizing these sequential timestamps, ensures that the ordering remains consistent and logical, thereby preserving the network's overall functioning and security. Allowing "negative work," or disruptions in this order, could lead to significant issues, hence reinforcing the need for a more robust timestamp-based approach in managing blockchain consensus mechanisms.
