Censorship Resistant Transaction Relay - Taking out the garbage(man)

In a recent discussion, an innovative approach was suggested for miners to signal their stance on certain transactions without incurring significant costs. The method involves miners broadcasting a statement through the creation of a single block, which serves as an expensive signal, even if subsequent blocks do not build upon it. Alternatively, and potentially more efficiently, miners could opt to publish a feed of 'weak blocks' on their social media platforms. These weak blocks, which require minimal mining effort—just a few seconds to minutes before returning to mine on the blockchain's tip—would contain the hash of each rejected block within a coinbase OP_RETURN.

This strategy is predicated on the notion that even a modest success rate in creating these weak blocks could effectively deter other miners from including transactions deemed undesirable or "bad". The underlying economic rationale suggests that the costs associated with executing this form of attack should be roughly equivalent to the extra revenue miners would otherwise gain from fees associated with the censored transactions. However, it is acknowledged that miners' risk aversion could amplify the effectiveness of this strategy, making it a more attractive option than its cost might suggest.

The proposition, while innovative, also carries an implicit caution. There's a clear preference expressed for avoiding such measures, indicating a recognition of the potential downsides or ethical concerns associated with deliberately manipulating transaction inclusion through these means. This nuanced view points towards a deeper conversation about the balance between miner autonomy and the collective good within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
