Recovery of transaction history on a phone that has been active for several years involves complexities similar to recovering on-chain wallets using a seed. This process, if not streamlined through simplified payment verification (SPV), requires downloading all the blockchain blocks. Introducing an indexer service that specifically reads and compiles Shielded Bitcoin transfers from the Bitcoin L1 blockchain could potentially decrease the amount of data required for recovery. Such a reduction is contingent on the limited use of Shielded Bitcoin; if Shielded Bitcoin were used predominantly, the benefits of this selective data handling would be minimized.
The utilization of a specialized service that filters only Shielded Bitcoin transfers offers privacy benefits as it does not learn specific transaction details beyond the user’s engagement with Shielded Bitcoin. However, this still obligates the user's device to scan through these filtered transactions to identify personal transactions, relying heavily on the trustworthiness of the service in reporting all relevant Shielded Bitcoin transfers accurately.
Alternatively, a service provided with a user's viewing key would have access to detailed transaction information but could tailor the blockchain data returned to include only the segments containing the user’s coins. This method compromises privacy to an extent similar to SPV but allows for more efficient data processing. Despite these advancements, creating filters for Shielded Bitcoin transfers remains challenging without a clear equivalent to BIP-157, which provides widely accepted SPV security while allowing flexibility in choosing or changing service providers.
