Bitcoin-rs: an independent Bitcoin full node written in Rust

The new project, bitcoin-rs, represents a fresh approach to Bitcoin full node implementation using Rust. Unlike traditional models such as Bitcoin Core, bitcoin-rs introduces several innovative architectural elements designed to enhance performance and reliability. A key feature of this independent implementation includes an integrated UTXO and script-index model. This design enables the node to maintain the canonical UTXO set essential for validation while supporting common wallet and explorer queries through a read-only, Esplora-compatible script index. Such integration significantly reduces the dependency on separate Electrum indexers, streamlining the node's functionality.

Further distinguishing itself, bitcoin-rs employs a modular architecture with clearly defined failure boundaries across its various components—consensus, chainstate, storage, networking, mempool, indexing, and orchestration. This structure ensures that each module remains compact and isolated, minimizing complexity and preventing failures from affecting the entire system. The overall performance of the node is optimized by tightly integrating synchronization, storage, memory usage, concurrency, I/O, and indexing processes, positioning bitcoin-rs as a competitive alternative to Bitcoin Core in terms of whole-node performance.

Additionally, bitcoin-rs supports script validation through both a native Rust implementation and a kernel-backed option via libbitcoinkernel. The latter can also serve as an oracle to verify the accuracy of the native implementation. To bolster confidence in the node's correctness and performance, a comprehensive verification framework is being developed. This framework will utilize multiple independent references including libbitcoinkernel for consensus paths, bitcoinfuzz for testing under differential and adversarial conditions, Bitcoin Core’s qa-assets corpus for edge cases, along with custom regression tests and benchmarks focused on synchronization, reorgs, recovery, and performance metrics. This methodical approach aims to ensure that all results are reproducible when compared with Bitcoin Core, thereby increasing trust in the claims made about bitcoin-rs's capabilities.

For those interested in exploring or contributing to the development of bitcoin-rs, further information and resources can be found at the project’s GitHub repository and its live mainnet explorer available at bitcoin-rs-explorer.gosunuts.xyz. Community feedback and independent verification are particularly encouraged to refine and validate the architecture and verification methodologies employed.
