TCP hole punching for Bitcoin nodes behind home NATs?

The issue at hand involves the accessibility disparity between honest nodes and those controlled by attackers within the context of Bitcoin's network connectivity. Attackers currently hold an advantage because they are more likely to secure outbound connection slots, which could potentially compromise the network's integrity and efficiency. This problem is highlighted by recent data that details the success rates of outbound connections for a Bitcoin node, which can be viewed here.

To address this vulnerability, the proposal of implementing hole punching technology emerges as a promising solution. Hole punching would enhance the reachability of honest nodes, thereby leveling the playing field against attackers. Among the suggested strategies, the second option is particularly notable due to its feasibility and the significant proportion of nodes that already utilize Tor addresses. This suggests that these nodes have the necessary infrastructure to support such an implementation without requiring extensive modifications or additional resources. This approach not only mitigates the current disadvantage faced by honest nodes but also capitalizes on existing capabilities within the network, making it a cost-effective and efficient solution.
