Reducing Bitcoin Full Node Storage Without Consensus Changes

Fault-injection testing plays a crucial role in validating the reliability of the compressed block format. By deliberately truncating records, corrupting data frames, and interrupting write operations, it becomes possible to assess how effectively the system detects and handles incomplete or damaged data. These tests should verify that critical operations such as startup, reindexing, and pruning fail safely under adverse conditions rather than proceeding with partial or corrupted information.

An additional consideration is the shifting of resource costs brought about by storage reduction through compression. While disk space requirements decrease, the demands on CPU resources increase due to the need for decompression during validation and reindexing processes. For comprehensive performance evaluation, it is essential to report metrics on validation and reindex times, providing visibility into any potential trade-offs between storage efficiency and processing overhead.
