Concept Review: B-SSL (Bitcoin Secure Signing Layer) — Covenant-Free Vault Model Using Taproot, CSV, and CLTV

The summer project discussed involves a sophisticated construction in cryptocurrency vault mechanisms, where certain operational choices have been highlighted for their uniqueness and efficacy. Unlike traditional discussions that often overlook these elements, the implementation of an enforced operational delay by two independent actors is notable. This delay includes both a client-side mechanism (nLockTime) and a Custody Service (CS) that refuses short delays, ensuring enhanced security against premature operations.

Another innovative approach within this construction is the method of expiry handling. Instead of allowing the risk associated with aging, which can be silent and unnoticed, there is a scheduled rotation system in place. This proactive strategy mitigates risks before they become problematic. Furthermore, the involvement of Custody Agents and their collaboration on a recently co-published article with the BitVault team underscores the relevance and application of these strategies. The article uses B-SSL in the context of vault-layer operations, further examining these constructions with expert reviews from individuals like Francesco and Riccardo.

However, the whitepaper associated with this construction intentionally does not specify details regarding the transport mechanism. This omission becomes critical especially considering the use of MuSig2 for aggregate operations on the operational keypath. Such operations necessitate careful movement of nonce and partial-signature rounds across a platform that must prevent nonce reuse at all costs. The intricate details of these transport requirements are currently being discussed in a separate dedicated thread, which can be explored further here.

Lastly, a significant question remains concerning the 350-day refresh process, which is driven by the CS. Should the CS become unavailable, the necessity for the client to either adhere to its own schedule or rely on a fallback path that matures independently is a crucial consideration. This aspect brings forward the need for a robust understanding of dependency on external services and the implications of their failure on operational security and continuity.
