In the realm of cryptocurrency mining, an interesting operational dynamic exists between miners and pools which is often overlooked. Miners typically connect to pools via a proxy that serves as an intermediary. This setup allows the proxy to observe and interact with the miners directly. A critical aspect of this relationship revolves around the liveness check performed every 30 seconds. This mechanism aims to identify and isolate miners that have ceased operations or are otherwise non-responsive. When a miner stalls, it is excluded from the pool’s aggregate computation, effectively rendering it invisible at a moment when intervention might be necessary to rectify its performance issues.
However, this method has inherent limitations. Specifically, the pool's overall estimate of miner performance does not always accurately reflect the status of individual miners, especially those encountering problems. This discrepancy arises because the decrease in output from one failing miner can be overshadowed by the total output from all active miners. Therefore, while the pool benefits from a comprehensive view of the aggregated shares, it struggles to pinpoint and address declines in individual miner outputs effectively.
