Towards New Self-Custody Best Practices

In the domain of cryptocurrency storage, there is an ongoing discussion about the potential enhancements that could be made to software wallets to increase their user-friendliness and security. A significant suggestion in this area is the increased support for multisignature (multisig) setups within these wallets. Multisig wallets require multiple keys to authorize a transaction, which enhances security by distributing the risk among multiple devices or parties.

A practical enhancement proposed involves encoding the master extended public keys (xpubs) directly on the blockchain. This method would not only secure the keys but also facilitate ease of access and recovery. By storing these crucial components on-chain in a secure manner, users would not need to take additional steps to back them up externally. This could be particularly advantageous in configurations such as 2-of-3 or 3-of-5 schemes, where losing one key doesn't jeopardize access to the assets, provided the remaining keys are accessible and secure.

This approach could significantly simplify the user experience by reducing the complexity and responsibility placed on individual users to manage and back up their keys. The integration of such features would likely contribute to wider adoption and trust in using software wallets for managing digital assets securely.
