Generate truly random seed words using only dice or playing cards

Aug 17 - Aug 18, 2026

  • In light of recent security concerns, particularly the ColdCard incident, a novel method has been introduced for generating seed words to enhance cryptographic security.

This new system leverages the use of ordinary dice and playing cards as tools to produce seed words, providing a manual and offline approach to entropy generation. By either rolling two dice up to three times or using shuffled playing cards, users can generate their own secure seed words without the need for digital intervention. This method is specifically designed for individuals who value a physical, interactive process in their security measures.

The procedure for generating seed words using this system is simple yet robust, aiming to eliminate biases that might occur in digital entropy processes. It ensures that all generated seed words are free from online vulnerabilities, offering an added layer of security for managing digital assets. The entire methodology and its implementation details have been made publicly available on GitHub, allowing anyone interested in this technique to access, review, and utilize it for their security needs. Those interested in exploring this system further can find more information and the repository at analog-seed-entropy.

Currently, the system's documentation serves more as a specification rather than a comprehensive guide. Feedback suggests that including a brief worked example and instructions for practicing with an empty wallet before actual usage could make it more accessible, especially for non-technical users. The potential for expanding the documentation will be considered based on user engagement and interest in this innovative security approach.
