Further investigation revealed that the manipulation of timestamps can significantly impact the real-world timing for when miners can compete for the next block. By artificially setting the timestamp of a block about 1 hour and 55 minutes ahead of the actual time—close to the maximum future block tolerance of 2 hours—the miner who adjusts this timestamp can delay the opening of the next min-difficulty window by approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. This practice not only extends the miner's advantage but also diminishes the competition by excluding others who calculate their entry based on a typical 20-minute interval from the previous block's real-time stamp.
These findings suggest that disabling the timestamp manipulation exception could mitigate such strategic behaviors, thereby maintaining fair competition among miners. The proposal to remove this exception aims to eliminate both the rapid broadcast and timestamp manipulation strategies, creating a more equitable mining environment. This approach supports earlier discussions within the community and adds another layer of rationale for adjusting the current protocols to prevent abuse of the timestamp system in blockchain mining operations.
