The concept of sidechains as a mechanism for blockchain innovation continues to evolve, with various propositions and implementations being discussed within the community. One such idea is the 'spacechains' concept introduced by Ruben Somsen, where bitcoins are burned to enter the sidechain. This approach raises questions about the identity and value of the resulting coin, since it lacks a reverse transaction path back to bitcoin, potentially redefining its essence.

Further development in this area led to the creation of what has been termed "hodlchain." Unlike 'spacechains', 'hodlchain' incorporates Conditional Time-Locked contracts or fidelity bonds instead of outright burning. This method is seen as a way to unlock dormant value, rewarding holders for their positive externalities without necessitating behavioral change. The use of time locks in 'hodlchain' introduces an additional variable - the time value of money (TVOM), which provides a different dimension to the economic model of the chain.

Concerning the minting and supply strategies outlined in Section 3 of the discussed document, there's a debate about the fairness and effectiveness of fixed per epoch minting schedules. Fixed minting is perceived as potentially inequitable for average users who must navigate an uncertain market to discern value. The adjustment in 'hodlchain' allows for flexibility in how value is assessed and preserved, suggesting that while fixed minting accommodates fluctuating market valuations on one end, it might not fully align with user interests on the other.

Moreover, the design philosophy behind these innovations seems to be geared towards building consensus from the act of burning, akin to a proof of work system that leverages Bitcoin’s established security protocols. This underpins the newer models with a foundational layer of security while attempting to introduce new functionalities and opportunities for users. However, the perception that these coins are no longer bitcoin poses significant challenges in user adoption, despite the potential speculative interest from mining new or minted coins.

Overall, the ongoing experimentation and dialogue in the development of sidechains like 'spacechains' and 'hodlchain' highlight the dynamic nature of blockchain technology exploration. These discussions reflect both the technical creativity and the complex economic considerations that developers grapple with as they innovate within this space.
