Add importprivkeys RPC

Oct 3 - Aug 21, 2026

  • The integration and management of private keys into Bitcoin Core descriptor wallets have been a topic of ongoing discussion and development within the cryptocurrency community, particularly affecting users involved with Namecoin.

A notable advancement in this area is the creation of the Core-Wallet-Migration-Tools, now accessible on GitHub. This Python-based tool aids users in migrating their private keys, encompassing both legacy and Bech32/SegWit formats, into Bitcoin Core descriptor wallets. The tool can be found at Core-Wallet-Migration-Tools.

Further addressing these challenges, there's a proposal for a new 'importprivkeys' RPC call designed specifically for descriptor wallets, which differs from the 'importprivkey' used for legacy wallets. This proposed command would enable the direct importation of Wallet Import Format (WIF) keys into descriptor wallets, aiming to simplify the user experience significantly. More details about this proposal can be reviewed in a document available on Gist at Proposal: Add importprivkeys RPC.

Additionally, there has been a constructive dialogue on the Bitcoin Development Mailing List regarding potential improvements to the existing wallet commands. Suggestions include refining the operational efficiency between the 'importprivkeys' and 'importdescriptors' commands by either merging their functionalities or allowing one to serve as a proxy for the other. This change could reduce confusion and enhance user interaction with the system. Another enhancement under consideration is the introduction of an 'auto_checksum' boolean flag to the 'importdescriptors' command, which would automate the checksum process, reducing user error and simplifying operations.

In parallel developments, updates to the Core Wallet Migration Tools have been made to support more address types under the name combo-import, according to the original proposal linked above. Additionally, the release of the Core Wallet Maintenance Tools is now public on GitHub at Core Wallet Maintenance Tools. This includes scripts for extracting private keys from descriptors, initially developed for Namecoin but now also applicable to Bitcoin, highlighting proactive community efforts to enhance tool functionality and user experience across different blockchain platforms.
