In recent discussions among Bitcoin developers, the need for transitioning to quantum-resistant signatures has been highlighted. The primary concerns associated with this transition include deciding whether to freeze or leave vulnerable funds exposed, ensuring the transition does not destabilize Bitcoin or divide its community, and preventing market chaos from a disorderly transition. Addressing these issues, one proposal suggests a three-phase approach to smoothly integrate Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) keys into the Bitcoin network.
The suggested strategy begins by allowing users to optionally add PQC keys to their Taproot addresses immediately. This initial phase is crucial as it introduces the new security measures without mandating immediate changes for all users, thus providing flexibility and time for adjustment. Following this, a soft fork could be implemented to disable vulnerable signatures before the quantum threat becomes a tangible reality. Importantly, this phase would include a lengthy migration period of at least four years, offering ample time for users to transition without pressure.
The final phase of the proposed approach involves gradually phasing out old signatures when the quantum threat is imminent, rather than enforcing an abrupt changeover. This gradual deactivation process aims to minimize disruption and avoid inducing panic within the Bitcoin community. To facilitate this orderly transition, the proposal includes incentives such as lower fees for secure transactions and enhanced wallet tools to ease the migration process. Furthermore, continuous real-time monitoring of vulnerable addresses is recommended to mitigate potential risks effectively.
Key to the success of this plan is clear communication and avoiding a sudden "D-Day" scenario where everything changes at once. By maintaining transparency and not disadvantaging any stakeholders, the transition can uphold Bitcoin’s foundational philosophy while enhancing its security against quantum threats.
