Bitcoin Resilience Presentations — August 5

On the upcoming Wednesday, August 5th at 10am PT, Blockchain Commons is set to conduct a Gordian Developers Meeting that focuses on advanced Bitcoin security techniques. The primary aim of this session is to enhance the protection of Bitcoin assets stored in Bitcoin Core by integrating it more effectively within the broader Bitcoin ecosystem. The meeting will include practical demonstrations on exporting descriptors and extended private keys from Bitcoin Core, utilizing Shamir's Secret Sharing and metadata for secure data storage, and methods for creating and managing BIP-39 secrets remotely.

The workshop will feature two key presentations aimed at both demonstrating and expanding current Bitcoin security practices. Shannon Appelcline, author of "Learning Bitcoin from the Command Line," will lead the first presentation titled "Sharding Secrets to Protect Your Bitcoin." This talk will address the lack of support in Bitcoin Core for certain resilience features like BIP-39 entropy or mnemonics and seed import. It will compare BIP-32 and BIP-39, showcasing how to integrate these into Bitcoin Core through entropy-based descriptors or by exporting master extended keys, alongside best practices for metadata usage.

The second presentation will be delivered by Stan Reeves, Professor Emeritus of ECE at Auburn University, focusing on "Keylay"—a protocol designed for secure multisig setup exchange among remote participants. This protocol emphasizes maintaining air-gap security and minimizing metadata leakage through the use of ephemeral X25519 sessions, adversarial relay assumptions, and BC-UR/BBQr animated QR for air-gap bridging. The presentation will also discuss potential future integration with Nostr to enhance transport layer security.
