New BIP Editors: 1 Year Later

Jul 15 - Jul 21, 2025

  • The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) process has witnessed significant changes over the past year, notably with the introduction of new BIP Editors aimed at enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of the process.

This strategic move was highlighted by the addition of five new BIP Editors in April of the previous year, which marked a turning point for the BIP repository's activity levels. The impact of this decision is evident when comparing the performance metrics of the BIP process before and after these additions. Initially, the process saw 80 comments left by editors, 44 Pull Requests (PRs) merged, 6 PRs closed, and 4 BIP numbers assigned over a 15-month period. Subsequent to the inclusion of the new editors, there was a substantial increase in productivity, with 1272 comments made, 261 PRs merged, 122 PRs closed, and 22 BIP numbers assigned during the same timeframe.

This considerable uptick in activity not only signifies a rejuvenation of the BIP process but also underscores the successful integration of new editors into the framework. Nevertheless, it also reveals an uneven distribution of workload among the editors, with a limited number of them shouldering the majority of the work. This imbalance prompts a reevaluation of the commitment levels of all BIP Editors and poses the question of whether some editors should be replaced by individuals more capable or willing to contribute extensively. The scenario suggests a pressing need for a review and potential adjustment of the BIP Editors' roles and contributions to ensure the ongoing effectiveness and progression of the BIP process.
