BIP Idea: incrementalrelayfee in feefilter?

In the pursuit of adopting lower transaction fees, one programmer shares their firsthand experience with the challenges and potential solutions in a communication to a peer. They highlight the initial difficulty in finding peers that support a lower minimum relay transaction fee (minrelaytxfee), a critical element for wallets seeking to offer users the advantage of lower fees. This challenge was compounded by an oversight where many nodes did not update their minimum incremental fee policy (minincrementalfee), further complicating the process of peer selection. The inability to inspect a peer's minincrementalfee poses a significant barrier to adoption, as it makes it nearly impossible to find compatible peers without resorting to less than ideal methods.

The programmer suggests that there should be more transparency regarding the conditions under which other nodes relay transactions. This would prevent unnecessary spamming of transactions that peers are unwilling to accept and facilitate smoother adoption of lower fee policies. They also mention not being familiar with BIP 153 but express an intent to explore it to better understand its implications.

To address these challenges, two ideas are proposed. The first is a straightforward solution to expose the incremental relay fee settings. The second, more ambitious proposal involves configuring nodes to actively seek out peers that meet specific minrelaytxfee and minincrementalfee criteria during the peer discovery process. This approach aims to ensure that a node connects with at least a couple of high-quality peers that align with its fee thresholds, thus improving the overall network compatibility and supporting the adoption of lower fees. The discussion underscores the need for adaptability and innovation within the Bitcoin development community to enhance user experience and encourage wider usage.
