Draft BIP for discussion: Time-Shifted Proof of Work (TSPOW) — an informational consensus-design proposal

The concept of modifying the blockchain mining process without forking can be achieved by establishing a mining pool that adheres to specific, personalized rules. Such an approach ensures compatibility with the existing system while introducing efficiencies in data management and storage. For instance, each node within this proposed system could independently extract difficulty levels from block headers and maintain a separate record of difficulty periods. This data would then be integrated into the actual header as necessary.

Periodically — every two weeks, in this scenario — the storage format could be optimized from "80 * 2016 bytes" to a more compact "4 + (76 * 2016) bytes". This change would modify the block header but maintain backward compatibility with the current blockchain infrastructure. The adaptation has been somewhat mirrored in practice where mining pools dominate, and individual (solo) miners are increasingly rare. In operational terms, these pools manage the distribution of rewards by tracking and compensating contributions based on shares submitted by the participating miners to the pool's operator. This system not only simplifies the transaction and reward process but also enhances the efficiency and scalability of mining operations within the blockchain network.
