Our weekly newsletter is focused on keeping you updated on what's new in Bitcoin, and summarizes the bitcoin-dev, lightning-dev and delving bitcoin mailing lists

Subjective information hazards in blockchain systems pose significant challenges due to their permanent, immutable storage and lack of granular user control. There is a clear demand for protocols enabling safe local redaction of such hazards, empowering node operators to exclude personally sensitive data without sacrificing archival functionality, though no robust solutions or active development exist in this domain Information Hazards and Safe Redaction.

A compact and formally verified multiplication routine for Bitcoin Script has been developed, overcoming prior consensus constraints by supporting safe 16-bit multiplication within BIP-342’s 4-byte operand limits. The implementation, accompanied by Coq proofs and comprehensive test harnesses, highlights the trade-offs between consensus-agnostic soundness and bytecode efficiency, with ongoing research into further optimizations and its applicability should future protocol upgrades occur Multiplication in Tapscript.

Bitcoin Core v32.1 introduces critical security updates, performance enhancements, and expanded peer-to-peer capabilities, while rendering versions 29.x and earlier obsolete and unsupported. Notable improvements include refined Tor and I2P networking, global transaction relay rate limiting, GUI enhancements, and strengthened wallet, mining, and REST API functionality, with full upgrade and release notes available at Bitcoin Core v32.1 Released.

Recent experimentation with eltoo-style state channels using APO+CTV, CSFS+CTV ladders, and the new TEMPLATEHASH+CSFS+INTERNALKEY scripts demonstrates significant reductions in update witness size and script complexity. The latest approach, leveraging TEMPLATEHASH, enables more flexible and concise channel update logic, as evidenced by reproducible test transactions and openly available reference scripts Eltoo State Chain with Templatehash.

Additional developments include the launch of a user-friendly, daily-updated bitcoin-dev mailing list archive with advanced thread navigation and author indexing bitcoin-dev Archive, active testnet progress and open review for FinalisCore’s deterministic BFT finality and confidential UTXOs FinalisCore Update, an innovative cost-backed identifier scheme to strengthen Sybil resistance via memory-bound proofs Satoshi Hike 2.3, and a new protocol proposal for accelerating block propagation through mempool-level soft agreement based on Snowball consensus variants Snowball to Snowstorm.

  • Transactions were constructed to minimize fees and chain multiple runestone mints using P2A and OP_RETURN.

  • Unsolicited transaction chains bypassed standard relay, causing mempool inconsistencies and unusual propagation.

  • Third parties burned P2A outputs promptly, halting the minting process and affecting network performance.

  • A Merkle tree's depth directly increases the witness size by 32 bytes per added level.

  • Witness sizes exceed typical P2WPKH sizes as Merkle trees become deeper.

  • Only shallow Merkle trees maintain efficiency advantages and comparable witness sizes to P2WPKH.

  • A sharechain can reject invalid coinbase submissions but cannot enforce payout redirection on Bitcoin’s mainchain.

  • Miners can redirect block rewards at will, with sharechain penalties limited to off-chain sanctions.

  • Bitcoin protocol lacks mechanisms to enforce off-chain payout agreements, undermining trustless pooling efforts.

  • Nodes reject spending coinbase outputs before reaching a maturity of 100 blocks.

  • Transactions involving immature coinbase outputs cannot enter the mempool, limiting advance data availability.

  • Users must depend on external sources for transaction details prior to mempool eligibility, presenting challenges.

  • Running a Bitcoin node allows individuals to independently validate transactions, ensuring privacy and minimizing trust.

  • Operating a personal node is essential only when trusted parties are absent within one’s trust boundary.

  • Node operation offers personal security benefits and helps strengthen the decentralization and resilience of the network.

  • Robust state management depends on clear and uniformly applied validation rules by all indexers.

  • Specification documents should define versioning protocols, activation criteria, and detailed implementation guidelines.

  • Comprehensive test vectors enable developers to confirm consistent outcomes across different software versions.

  • Bitcoin's base layer faces partial, not total, cryptographic exposure, allowing limited resistance to quantum threats.

  • One-way pegs enable movement into external systems but block secure returns, causing token value instability.

  • Lacking bidirectional pegs, such systems limit flexibility and are less effective than fully-backed stablecoin mechanisms.

  • Structural alignment with the block header format does not guarantee mineability using standard ASIC hardware.

  • Additional prefix and suffix commitments in the preimage require custom handling beyond typical nonce manipulation.

  • Compatibility with existing ASIC miners depends on generating valid preimages according to extended requirements.

  • Fault-injection testing ensures the system safely detects and handles incomplete or damaged data.

  • Storage compression lowers disk usage but increases CPU requirements during validation and reindexing.

  • Reporting validation and reindex times highlights trade-offs between storage efficiency and processing overhead.

  • Enforcing strict ordering and independent revocation verification is vital for security in multi-signer protocols.

  • Pseudorandom secret sharing ensures that only authorized signer groups can reconstruct secrets, preventing collusion.

  • Aggregate terms are weighted to mitigate manipulation, but careful management of retries and signer honesty is essential.

  • SPc receivers need scanners that extract the `A_send` value and apply the SPc derivation method.

  • Implementing explicit encoding and versioning prevents misinterpretation of different coinbase-tag formats in wallets.

  • Clear wallet behavior specifications ensure consistency during blockchain reorganizations with same-height competing blocks.

  • Bandwidth budgeting is determined by the broadcast transaction size, not the number of peers.

  • Total measured usage does not change if more peers receive the broadcast announcement.

  • Actual bandwidth consumption varies greatly, depending on how many peers request transaction data.

  • The policy ID uses a BIP340 tagged hash with the tag CSP/policy, reflecting its canonical serialization.

  • Policies with unknown or duplicate fields are invalid, and explicit serialization ensures accurate enforcement.

  • Implementation will include test vectors covering valid, invalid, and exact-byte cases for thorough verification.
